Supporting Democracy, Governance and Health
Center professionals work with host country counterparts to apply ICT to streamline the delivery of government services, maximize transparency, ensure fair elections and use the Internet to increase citizen participation.
Examples of Center results in these areas:
- Establish a computerized document management system for accepting
applications and tracking the processing of the issuance of permits
and licenses, and implement a tax automation system to improve effectiveness
and transparency of tax collection by rural municipalities (Romania).
- Support the National Electoral Commission to improve the management
of a database of registered voters and use handheld computers (PDAs)
to facilitate voter registration (Rwanda).
- Enable municipal governments to communicate among themselves via
electronic networks to establish effective knowledge sharing mechanisms
among rural mayors (Central America).
- Train women candidates for political office in how to use the Internet
to increase women’s participation in politics (Morocco).
- Use handheld computers to increase the efficiency of data collection
from health centers and to improve data analysis and subsequent decision-making
processes (Nepal).
- Improve efficiency in the processing of social security assistance
requests by providing software, training and networking within local
government entities (Romania).
- Facilitate the identification and conversion of development-related
content in health, governance, education, and agriculture, to expand
rapidly the amount of locally relevant, local-language content available
through the Internet (Mali, Bulgaria, Macedonia).
